Nigerian President Bola Tinubu increases salaries of military personnel of up to 80% for military personnel, as announced by the presidency on Tuesday. The salary boost occurs while Nigeria contends with various security threats across its regions.
Islamic militants, such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), persist in launching assaults in the northeast, while heavily armed criminal organizations, commonly referred to as bandits, function in areas of the northwest.
Abductions for ransom have proliferated in parts of north-central Nigeria, and security forces also confront sporadic separatist-related violence in the southeast.
Big changes are coming to the military’s pay scale. Starting September 1, high-ranking officers like colonels and generals will get a 30% raise. Those in the middle ranks, from colonel to warrant officer, will see their pay jump by 50%. And for the lower ranks, from private to staff sergeant, the increase will be a whopping 80%. This news comes from presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga, who announced the revised compensation plan. It’s a significant boost in pay for military personnel, and it will be interesting to see how it affects morale and retention in the armed forces. Tinubu stated that his government would persist in prioritizing troops’ welfare and modernizing the armed forces with the necessary weapons and technologies to address security challenges.
