Ugandan right-back David Owori has died after being hurt in an attack by people suspected to be thugs.SC Villa, the Ugandan Premier League club he played for, shared that Owori, who was the team’s captain, passed away while being treated at a clinic.The club said, “We are very sad to share the sudden death of our captain, David Owori, who was getting treatment at Case Clinic after an attack by suspected thugs.”
They also praised Owori as a loyal and important player who made a difference at every level of the club.”SC Villa expresses its condolences to David’s family, teammates, friends, fans, and the whole football community during this tough time. David was a great player, leader, and true servant of the game.
His loss is deeply felt by the club and the country,” the club said.Owori was 27 years old.He started his career with Vipers SC, a Ugandan champion, in both their youth and senior teams. He joined SC Villa in 2018 and played there for three years before moving abroad.He played for Spanish club Velez CF and Swedish club Utsitkens BK.
In 2023, he came back to SC Villa, where he played until his death.His death happened just two months after another Ugandan sportsman, rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, died. Gongodyo was wrongly accused of stealing a woman’s handbag in Kampala and was beaten by a crowd.He was taken to Mulago District Hospital but later died from his injuries.
